Recollecting Cambodia

Hey all, Benjamin here! I’m one of the 22 that went to Cambodia. I decided I’d just do a short post on my memories of the trip.

Despite being back home in Singapore already, I feel that mentally, I’m still in Cambodia. Just that day, I thanked a person who held the lift for me with “Som Akun”! For any reader that doesn’t know, it means “Thank You” in Khmer.

I recall helping the kids with their food and baths, and playing games with them. Those were mutually beneficial experiences, and I’m sure the whole team enjoyed getting to help the less fortunate. Maybe when I grow up, I’ll go back to Cambodia and do more volunteer work. Don’t be surprised when I do!

Saying good bye to the country and the people that we worked with (Anton, Cleam, Lam, and Fr Henri) was definitely the most xin xuan (Chinese for heart aching) moment for me.

That said, my memories of the trip will endure and if any one of you out there have the impression that Cambodia is a backwater country, lacking in food, technology, or a compassionate society, then I tell you now that you are wrong. Cambodia is a wonderful place that you have to visit yourself in order to believe.

To end off, I’m looking forward to going back and meeting up with the friends we made! I’m sure the rest of the team are too!
